For decades, the workhorse running back was one of the NFL’s signature positions. Today that same archetype struggles to get paid. Star backs have publicly complained that the economics of the position have collapsed, and teams have made clear that they see the position as replaceable in a way that was unthinkable a generation ago.<\/p>\n
The underlying logic is about value over replacement. Teams have discovered that the difference between a great running back and a competent one is smaller than the difference at almost any other position. A league-average offensive line produces decent rushing numbers with almost any capable back behind it. A broken line produces disappointing numbers even with an elite one.<\/p>\n
The passing game has also changed the math. Modern offenses are built around the quarterback, the receivers, and the pass-blockers. Rushing yards remain important, but they’re increasingly produced through schemes \u2014 outside zone, wide-zone run-pass options, motion-heavy looks \u2014 rather than through the singular talent of the back himself. The ball-carrier becomes one variable in a system rather than its central figure.<\/p>\n
Compounding all of this is the physical toll. Running backs take more direct hits than almost any other position, and their effective careers tend to be short. Teams have concluded that investing long-term guaranteed money in a player likely to decline within a few years is a poor use of cap space.<\/p>\n
None of this means running backs don’t matter. The best ones still tilt games.
